The evening coat

8 Dec

A couple of months ago, I wasn’t really into coats. They were a bit of an after thought, I’d just grab the last one I threw onto a chair and hope it vaguely went with what I was wearing. Oh how foolish was I, I’ve seen the error of my ways after one or two faux pas. My black trench is never going to look good with denim cut offs and scuffed flat boots and my cape isn’t the best thing to wear with a super voluminous dress. Over the last month or so, I’ve learnt that a coat wasn’t a necessary evil which obscures a fabulous outfit, it’s like the frosting on a cupcake. The cape really comes into it’s own when paired with skinny jeans to accentuate it’s shape for example.

One type of coat that I hadn’t really though about was an evening coat, I relied on my smarter day coats to cope with my infrequent dressed up moments. However, the lovely guys at House of Fraser recently sent me this absolutely stunning Biba coat and it was love at first sight. The simple swing shape is perked up with beautiful brocade fabric and a fur trim, making it a subtle statement coat. I particularly liked the bracelet length sleeves, perfect for showcasing our wrist adornments in all of their glory. For me, the Christmas party season started last month and the Biba coat has kept me toasty at every single event, though I must admit it’s quite thin so no suitable for the freezing temperatures we’ve experienced over the last couple of days. It’s easy to dress the coat up, so I decided to dress it down with an Urban Outfitters tee, ASOS skirt and M&S boots to show it can be dressed down.

Marc Jacobs SS12 collection stolen.

Earlier this week, Marc Jacobs’ SS12 was cancelled as the entire collection was stolen in transit from Paris to London. Scotland Yard is investigating the situation. The Marc Jacobs Twitter account recently tweeted: “See any chic truck drivers cruising around Europe dressed in #SS12 collection? Get a pic and call 212-343-0222. Reward”. Luckily, the collection was duplicate samples so the collection as it was shown in New York is safe and the red carpet won’t be sans Jacobs.

Haute couture Pudsey!

Children in Need’s beloved Pudsey bear is an icon in his own right, but this year he’s been given a makeover by the finest names in fashion. The likes of Mulberry, Erdem, Jonathan Saunders, PPQ, Henry Holland, Giles Deacon and Liberty have given Pudsey a little makeover. Giles has created a silver version while Erdem have created a pure cashmere bear with a 1 carat diamond. The bears are being showcased at Liberty and will be auctioned off. Visit the Children in Need site for more information.

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld is expecting her first child.

Exciting news, in six months there will be a beautiful new addition to fashion’s royal family. Julia and her boyfriend of three years, Robert Konjic, will welcome their no doubt gorgeous bundle of joy in May.

Versace for H&M launches today!

17 Nov

Today is the day. In t-minus 2 hours, you can finally get your hands on the super amazing Versace for H&M collection. Hysteria was already building with reports of eager shoppers queuing at locations including Selfridges and Regents Street overnight to get their hands on the collection. The collection launches online and in selected stores at 9am tomorrow, if you’re joining the scrum take a moment to check out my top pics and read the rules direct from H&M.

“The first 280 in line will receive one of 14 different coloured bracelets, 20 people for each bracelet colour. On the bracelet you will be given a specific time for shopping in our designated area. The bracelets are only needed for our women’s collection. Customers buying the men’s collection will not require a bracelet. When your time slot arrives, you will enter the designated area to shop for 15 minutes. Our goal is to create a better shopping experience for all of our customers.
If you are not one of the first 280 in line, you will of course have the opportunity to shop from the men’s collection or within H&M. When the 14 groups have finished their shopping we will open up the women’s collection to all of our customers.
To make sure as many customers as possible are able to buy from the Versace for H&M collection, we have a shopping limit. Every customer can buy from the entire collection, but with a limit of purchasing a maximum of two pieces per product, ie not more than two sizes (shoes/garments) or pieces (accessories) per product per customer. The shopping limit covers the entire Versace for H&M collection. Your place in line does not guarantee any items from the Versace for H&M collection.”
For those not joining in the madness, settle down, put your feet up and enjoy the Versace for H&M commercial. It’s a little strange but I really like it though Donatella’s catchphrase isn’t a patch on “I want LANVIN not diamonds!”.

Push PR SS12 press day

14 Nov

I know Push PR have a diverse client list which covers everything from homeware to footwear and vintage brands but I always think of them for jewellery. I recently met up with them at their press day at The W and unsurprisingly came away a memory card full of stunning jewellery pieces from the likes of EC One and Alice Menter.

Becca – Dainty, nostalgic vintage inspired jewels.

EC One – My favourite designers at this quirky London jewellery boutique are Lucy Hutchings and Michael Milloy for their use of simple shapes.

Regal Rose – Surprisingly affordable, the collections feature studs, stars and skulls. The boot chains were a favourite, a really creative use of jewellery.

Alice Menter – Alice’s pieces are made out of everyday objects including bolts, nuts, zips and washers. Incredible.

Favourites – My two favourite pieces were this gorgeous statement necklace from Fiona Paxton and blue spike ring from Merle O’Grady, both available from EC One

Wednesday Wish List: Gothic charm jewels

9 Nov

Regular readers will know that I’m drawn to edgy, distinctive jewels with a bit of attitude. I had a field day when I checked out the Wolf & Badger site and saw their jewellery section was full of spiky, dangerous looking jewels from some of my favourite jewellery designers including Maria Francesca Pepe and Elyona. As much as I love McQueen, I feel like skull detail on jewellery has been done and prefer simple spikes and angular designs to give a hard edge to outfits. There are lots of cheaper alternatives around on the high street from the likes of Topshop and ASOS, but none of the pieces below are extortionate and I like to treat jewellery as an investment. I tend to really fall for certain pieces and wear them to death, some pieces like my Arty almost become a signature so it works out pretty well on a cost-per-wear basis.

My favourite piece is the Elyona pentagonal ring for it’s simplicity, it would make a bold statement on it’s own or distinctive and quirky when layered with other pieces. What’s your favourite piece?

Lana Del Ray lands Wonderland cover.

The newest IT girl on the scene, singer Lana Del Ray looks absolutely fantastic on the cover of Wonderland magazine. Adorned in Miu Miu jewels, the cover really plays up her sixties vibe with the styling and pretty pastel shades.

Five Supers, Duran Duran and Harper’s Bazaar unite for super project.

On the surface, it seems like a bit of a random mix but my gosh does it work. Harper’s Bazaar approached Duran Duran about collaborating on a project and bought keyboardist Nick Rhodes’ idea to life. Five of the original supermodels – Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Yasmin Le Bon, Cindy Crawford and Eva Herzigova – were reunited and played each member of the band in the video for their upcoming single “Girl Panic!” and for a super editorial in the December issue of Harper’s Bazaar. What do you think?

Happy birthday, Ms Wintour.

One of the most influential people in fashion celebrated her *whisper* 62nd *ends whisper* birthday yesterday. Let’s celebrate with some smiley Anna. Happy birthday!

Karlie Kloss gets her Victoria’s Secret wings!

The most adorable model on the circuit is turned 18 earlier this year and finally made her Victoria’s Secret debut. Next week sees her take to the infamous Victoria’s Secret runway as their show is filmed on Wednesday. Rumour has it that veteran Victoria’s Secret Angel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley won’t be making the show though as she’s booked for another job.

Behind the scenes at the TK Maxx Christmas advert.

Christmas seems to begin earlier and earlier every year, but seeing as the Christmas lights on Oxford Street were switched on and Starbucks red cups arrived this week, I think we can officially get excited! Here are some sneaky behind the scenes snaps of the TK Maxx Christmas advert.
