Model Spotlight: Frida Gustavvson

29 Jun

I hold my hands up, I have a girl crush on Frida Gustavsson and after this post you will too. She’s only been signed to IMG for little over two years but had racked up a more than impressive – not to mention extensive – list of campaigns, covers, editorials and shows. Within weeks of signing, she walked for Valentino couture as well as her first Vogue Italia editorial. Major labels including Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Luella, Gianfranco Ferre and Gareth Pugh featured Frida on their catwalks, in her first round of shows. Impressive. She went on to walk almost all the major couture shows from Armani Prive and Valentino to Christian Dior and Chanel as well as several editorials and covers including W, AnOther and French/Italian/British Vogue. Now a seasoned regular on the catwalk, she opens and closes for the likes of Marc Jacobs and Lanvin. In just two years, she almost makes the other supers look like slackers. She also has incredible personal style, she’s no stranger to the likes of Facehunter and Jak & Jil. If that’s not enough to convince you, feast your eyes on her beautiful face and killer legs.

Model Spotlight: Eniko Mihalik

24 Aug

Hungarian model Eniko Mihalik was discovered after taking part in Elite Model Look in 2002. After coming fourth, she had a quiet couple of years. She debuted at the Chanel couture show in 2006 and walked for a handful of designers before her big break last year. During the Spring/Summer 2009 shows, she walked for a staggering 50 designers including Givenchy, Diane von Furtenberg and Marchesa. This year, she has opened or closed for the likes of Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf, Jeremy Scott and Carolina Herrera.

Shortly after her super season, Ines van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin put her on an exclusive 6 month contract. She now has the honour of being their muse.

She’s a regular on the campaign trail, and is the face of Gucci, Kenzo and MaxMara under her belt. She’s also a magazine regular and has had a couple of stunning cover shots, my favourite is her i-D cover. She has been featured in editorials for the likes of Italian Vogue, French Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar  and W magazine.

Model Spotlight:Joan Smalls

18 Jul

I first spotted Joan when I poured over images of the Givenchy Couture presentation. There’s something about her, she’s definitely one to watch! Joan has been modelling for a little while, she was signed to Elite back in 2007, but got her big break after leaving Elite and signing with IMG late last year. A few months later, she walked the Givenchy couture show as an exclusive. She then went to walk in the Anna Sui, Gucci, Burberry, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino Autumn/Winter shows. Since then, she’s been shot by the likes of Meisel and Demarchelier and become one of the faces of Gucci. She seems like a favourite of Givenchy, as well as being in two couture shows, she is also in the Autumn/Winter campaign shot by Mert and Marcus.

Model Spotlight: Lais Ribeiro

18 May

Brazilian (relative) newcomer Lais Ribeiro is touted as the ‘next big thing’ and the ‘new Gisele’ by many in the fashion industry. That’s a hell of a lot of expectations on the pretty 19 year old’s shoulders, especially since she was only signed by her agency, Woman, earlier this year and has only done one season of runway shows. I say only, but Lais walked for Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Proenza, Versace, Alberta Ferretti. Gucci, Cavalli. Dior, Galliano and Givenchy to name but a few! The is without a doubt one of the prettiest models I’ve seen for a long time. Her face is flawlessly stunning. She also has a very versatile look from the runway images I’ve seen. What do you think of Lais?

Model Spotlight: Karlie Kloss

13 Apr
Seventeen year old Karlie Kloss is already a sensation. Her resume to date is rather impressive for someone so young, her first shoot was for Teen Vogue at the tender age of 14! She’s spends part of her life as a regular high-school student and the other part as one of the most in demand models in the industry, last year she was the most photographed model for American Vogue.
She is a catwalk favourite, she studied ballet for 6 years before becoming a model so she has natural poise and grace. She’s also racked up an impressive number of editorials, in some images her literally leaps out of the page at you. It’s no surprise that many big names in the industry have pegged her as the next American supermodel.
One of the nicest facts I’ve learnt about her is that she loves baking, she baked Alexander Wang cookies when she went to a fitting! How adorable is that?
“She’s a chameleon,” says Dior designer John Galliano. “She becomes this other creature in front of the lens. She thinks about her role, her pose, her part. She’s able to step in front of [photographer] Steven Meisel and all of us and be totally in control and self-assured, delivering pose after perfect pose”.

“She’s my lucky closer,” says Jason Wu, who has assigned her the coveted finale spot at his show for the past four seasons straight. “She has such presence. You see so many girls who are so young; it’s not very often that you find one with Karlie’s poise. I don’t think we’ve seen that since the supermodel days.” Galliano agrees, “She has a frisson of old-school glamour.”
