Based on the only must-watch reality show for fashionistas, it’s described at the ultimate weekend fashion, beauty and shopping extravaganza. As some of you may remember, I actually worked at the last event, helping to style one of the catwalk shows with my take on the geek chic look. Backstage at BNTM live

22 Oct

Today was the big day, the first day of Britain’s Next Top Model live at the Excel. As you may know, I was asked to help style a fashion show with five other super bloggers – Jenny, Frankie, Natasha, Alize and Matthew. Again, huge thanks to the guys at Motorola for this exciting opportunity. So being the big day, I was a bag of nerves. Not only was I one half of the high-street styling duo, I also had to go on stage to talk through geek chic fashion. Thankfully, the hubbub backstage kept me occupied. It was so hectic: briefing hair and make up, making sure our models were looked after, dressing and styling them up.

Matthew playing hide & seek!

Here is my gorgeous model Paige ready to rock and roll. Doesn’t she look like the epitome of geek chic?

Cardigan – River Island, blouse – Zara, skirt – Topshop, socks and satchel – Miss Selfridge and shoes – New Look

For my outfit, I wanted to take key Autumn/Winter trends and give them a geek chic twist. Although flat brogues are synonymous with geek chic, I went for these New Look heeled loafers to be different. The colour is absolutely delish and the platform keeps them on trend. The camel skirt from Topshop was absolutely irresistible, the a-line shape and pocket details won me over. I paired the camel skirt with a silky slate blouse from Zara, the big bow adds a girly and feminine touch to my geek chic outfit. I’ve layered a patterned knit cardigan from River Island over the blouse, patterned knit is typical geek chic and I just needed this cardi in the outfit. I also had a lovely leopard print satchel which can be seen in the pictures below.

How amazing do the high-street, high end and vintage models look?! Totally working the geek chic look.

I’m styling a show at the BNTM live event!

19 Oct

I have some uber-exciting news! As the title of the post suggests, I’m going to be styling a catwalk show at the Britain’s Next Top Model live event this weekend! Motorola are headline sponsors of the event and they have asked five super stylish bloggers (and me for some silly reason!) to style the catwalk show. I’ll be styling the high street segment with Jenny, Natasha and Frankie will be styling the vintage segment and Matthew and Alize will be doing high end. The theme of the show is geek chic in keeping with the current ‘too hip to be square’ ad campaign for the Flip Out phone. How stupendously excited am I?!

As a fan of the BNTM and ANTM shows, the idea of a live event was very exciting, let alone being involved in it. Huge thanks to the guys at Motorola. The event takes place at London’s ExCel centre between 22nd-24th October, if you haven’t got tickets yet, hurry!! It sounds like a fab event, there are celebrity performances, girls from BNTM in attendance, hair and beauty pampering and shopping.

So…onto my task. Although geek chic has been around for a while, it’s not so easy to style for a catwalk show. There are so many micro-trends within it – Gleek, Alexa Chung geek, Ugly Betty geek, Ghostworld geek, Shoreditch geek, Luella geek…the list goes on and on. Here are my favourite geek chic micro-trends:

Preppy geek chic – Think Blair Waldorf in season 1 of Gossip Girl, Alexa Chung and Rachel from Glee. Very proper and chic, a more sophisticated take on geek chic.
The details – Checks, cute shoes, bows and hairbands

New Look corsage cardigan – £22
New Look peter pan tie blouse – £21.99
River Island blue check skirt – £29.99
Topshop Greta square toe mary-janes – £60
Asos pearl effect hairband – £4

Grown up geek – A cross between a librarian and Ugly Betty (latest season), this is probably the most on trend geek look. The pieces individually are on trend but they clash slightly when together.
The details – Bows, animal print, texture and tweed

Topshop devoree burnout shrug – £35
F&F vintage ruffle blouse – £16
Topshop buckle wrap flannel skirt – £40
Asos soul bow detail kitten heel – £32
Asos statement cocktail ring – £18

Cosy geek – Very apt for this weather! No pop culture references for this one, just combine the cosiest of the autumn/winter trends into a cute geek chic outfit.
The details – shearling, cable knit and funny beanie hats

Asos cable knit roll neck jumper – £40
Oasis flannel pleat skirt – £40
New Look leather collar heeled boots – £64.99
River Island grey knitted racoon pom pom beanie – £14.99
Miss Selfridge purple space gloves – £10
