Winter Kate on ASOS

18 Dec

When Nicole Ritchie launched her Winter Kate label back in
2010, to say that the fashion industry was sceptical was an understatement. In
a time where every other celebrity had a clothing line, Winter Kate was just
another name to add to a long list. Sure, the petite star had style but there’s
a difference between being a well dressed celebrity (with or without the help
of a stylist) and having a successful clothing line. Fast forward almost two
years and both Winter Kate and House of Harlow 1960 are fully fledged
collections which include ready-to-wear, jewellery, eyewear, footwear and
handbags which are sold in the likes of Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus,
Selfridges and now ASOS. Nicole is really carving out a niche for 60s and 70s
style bohemian dresses and kimonos with feminine floaty silhouettes and pretty
embroidered details. Here are my top picks from the selection at ASOS:

TOMTOM Jewellery arrives at Nyla Boutique

18 Oct

During one of my regular ‘look at pretty things on Nyla Boutique’ sessions, I discovered that they cheekily added another fabulous jewellery
brand to their impressive brand roster – TOMTOM Jewellery. If the name sounds
familiar, it’s because designer Elena Coleman Howell designed a capsule
collection for Walt Disney Signatures for the film TRON: Legacy. It only takes
a quick peek at the precision and geometric shapes of the ‘Future 70s’
collection to realise that designer Elena’s background as a trained architect
is a huge inspiration for her designs. It may be a little predictable, but I
fell in love with this statement necklace from the collection. I love the
dreamy deep blue of lapis and it contrasts really well with the antique brass.

As with any great piece of jewellery, I can imagine wearing it in about a
million different ways. I’ve showcased two below: contemporary and classic. The
necklace is simple enough to be dressed down with a simple slogan tee and some
edgy metallic trousers. The blue suede platforms echo colour of the lapis
stones almost perfectly, pulling the outfit together. The classic outfit
features a chic, figure flattering dress from the Mary Portas range at House of
Fraser. The shoe boots add a little bit of an edge while the ring echoes the
triangle shapes in the necklace. How would you wear the necklace?

The Holy Grail Parka

11 Aug

Everyone has the one elusive Holy Grail fashion item that they’ve been searching for forever. Five minutes of asking about it on Twitter and I’m inundated: from vintage Missoni cardigans and a clear mac to a classic trench coat, it seems that everybody is looking for that perfect addition to their wardrobe. Stylist Frankie Murray is after black platform heels which aren’t too high with a thick heel, Sara from Daily Polish is after some specific Louboutins and has been searching since 2007 and Lyndsey from Be Gorgeous is, like many of us, searching for the perfect pair of skinny jeans.

I have my own fashion unicorn – the perfect parka. I have been searching for years, I’m not even kidding! Though they always come in and out of ‘fashion’, I think they are an incredibly versatile wardrobe addition. They are spot on for dressing down a little dress on a night out, toughening up a girly outfit or just throwing on over a casual, dressed down outfit. I’m not after anything special, just a long length parka with a dipped hem in khaki green with an oversize fur-lined hood…oh and it must be fairly warm. I did come close to the perfect parka once; it was by Theory at House of Fraser. It ticked all of the boxes but it was just too oversize, the smallest size absolutely swamped me. Here are some of the parkas I’ve found which are close…but not close enough.

Parka – £80 from ASOS
Parka – £80 from River Island

Parka – £30 on sale from House of Fraser

Parka – £98 from Topshop

If you see anything you think may be the parka, do let me know. I’d also love to hear what your Holy Grail items are. Maybe we can set up a support group?!

Double denim and a kimono

7 Aug

On days when you realise you have 15 minutes to get dressed, pack your bag and leave the house, it’s good to have a little trick up your sleeve to add a bit of effortless edge to an outfit. I picked up this kimono from Primark a couple of days ago and I’m so pleased with it. I’ve been after a slouchy cover up I can chuck on casually or dress up for work. I’ve seen kimonos in Topshop but couldn’t justify £45 so I’m glad I snapped up this £15 bargain from good old Primark. It’s totally transformed my really basic outfit into something a little more distinctive. I also threw in a little subtle double denim in the outfit, the wedges are really old but absolute essentials in my wardrobe, proving that ‘old is gold’.

The details…

Zoe Kravitz lands the ASOS magazine cover

6 Jun
As the progeny of two rather attractive, stylish and successful parents, it was always going to be a little difficult for Zoe Kravitz to step out of their shadow and be known as Zoe, rather than the daughter of Lenny Kravitz or Lisa Bonet. Having been a staple on style pages and blogs for a couple of years due to her flawless fashion sense, Ms Kravitz has scored the cover of ASOS magazine for next month, shot by Danielle Levitt. She also stars in X-Men: First Class (which is out now), this seems to be the very beginning of her ascent to superstar status, on her own terms.

“All that ‘it girl’ shit makes me kind of uncomfortable.  I’m only at the beginning of my career, but I feel successful in that I haven’t sold out in any way, shape or form.  I feel good about the choices I’ve made, and I don’t feel like I’ve let go of any of my values.  Fame has become this obsession for people, which kind of creeps me out.”

I want to be a One Teaspoon girl

27 Apr

I first came across Aussie brand One Teaspoon years ago when I spent a summer over in Sydney. They were stocked in General Pants, which was one of my main shopping hang outs – a brilliant place for discovering Aussie brands. I remember falling in love with one of their gorgeous dresses and thinking they were so effortlessly cool and rock n roll. Fast-forward a good 4(ish) years and I think exactly the same. Starting life as a handmade denim brand, the brand has expanded to a full fashion brand and is sold in 32 countries worldwide – including ASOS in the UK. I adore this sassy little LBD which can easily be worn dressed up or dressed down with flats and I’m a little obsessed with this cream playsuit with ruffle detailing and draped chains.
