Fashion Fix

29 Mar

Matthew Williamson for H&M Campaign!!

There’s a full sneak-peek post of the H&M collection coming very soon, but for now I’m giving you this totally gorgeous image of Daria Werbowy for the campaign. Matthew is also supposed to be in the campaign, I’m excited to see those pics! The campaign was shot in Mexico solely for the sunlight on a Mexican beach…what happened to a studio and lights?!

Wu wants Shoes

Since Michelle Obama picked him as her designer du jour, Jason Wu has been firmly placed in the spotlight. It’s no surprise that he’s had offers coming out of his ears, including book deals and reality shows. Thus far, Jason has done the sensible thing and turned down all these offers, to focus on expanding his offering into shoes and cosmetics. He must have read Fashion Babylon and seen where the chunk of LVMH’s fortune comes from! He hasn’t revealed who he has collaborated with, but it’s definitely not Manolo Blahnik.

The OutNet…Coming Soon

Net-a-Porter’s cut price cousin will be live within the next month! There’s no official launch date, but the new site is taking members. It promises over 200 luxury brands including Herve Leger, Christian Louboutin, Chloe and Oscar de la Renta with discounts between 40 to 60 percent. Merchandise will be a mixture of past season, classic pieces and best sellers from the archive…and apparently they also plan to give some items away for free!! If anyone from NAP is reading…I know a wonderful fashion lover who has recently been made redundant who will love you forever for some freebies 😉

Rick Owens Interview!!

I love ending my Fashion Fix with a great interview, usually Karl Lagerfeld. Unfortunately there’s no Karl this week but I do have some choice excerpts from a couple of Rick Owens interviews! The full interviews can be found at Details and Vice Magazine

He makes heart leap-inducing clothes, but he’s not a fan of them himself.

I’m not really into clothes. I wear one outfit like a uniform, and I have for years. Black sweatpants, black baggy shorts over them, a black or white cotton t-shirt, and a black cashmere t-shirt over that. I couldn’t imagine having to change outfits every day or having to change for the gym. This outfit takes me to the gym, to work in the studio, and then to dinner with a mink coat over it.

In fact, he’d rather you work out than buy clothes.

Working out is modern couture. No outfit is going to make you look or feel as good as having a fit body. Buy less clothing and go to the gym instead.

The extreme sensation of working out has replaced the mosh pits of my earlier years and the sex clubs for years after that. It’s a great combo of discipline, joyous release, meditation, and vanity. Music never sounded as good as it does now, pounding through those earbud headphones into the pit of my stomach as I feel my muscles swell.

If he accosts you on the street in Paris, it’s probably not a good thing.

I’ve lived in Paris for six years, and I’m sorry to say that the Ugly American syndrome still exists. Sometimes you just want to say “Stop destroying the landscape with your outfit.” Still, from a design standpoint, I’m tempted to redo the fanny pack. I look at it as a challenge — it’s something to react against.

But if you’re trying to impress him . . .

Hair and shoes say it all. Everything in between is forgivable as long as you keep it simple. Trying to talk with your clothes is passive-aggressive.

There’s something a little too chatterboxy about color. Right now I want black, for its sharpness and punctuation.

It’s not likely he’ll design anywhere else.

Honestly, Revillon was my only temptation. I would never be the slightest bit interested again. I’m not saying that bitterly, I had a lovely time with Revillon. But why would I want to put all that effort into someone else’s company when I can put it into my own?

And you probably won’t be seeing any Rick Owens advertising, either.

Advertising pulls you more deeply into the fashion system than I’m willing to go. I have enough, and my business is growing at a pace that’s gradual enough to be safe, yet fast enough to be motivating. And advertising’s another job, like runway shows. Once you start, you need to be ready to do it forever. That being said, though, I never thought I’d be doing runway shows.

The best of the rest…

Alber the clown: At the opening of the London Lanvin store, Alber had the crowd in stitches.

LVMH going ethical: Rumours are circulating about LVMH buying ethical label Edun.

Gucci loves girls: More rumours…apparently 9 girls have been cast for the Fall 09 Gucci campaign.

Gwynnie the designer: Gwyneth Paltrow is to collaborate with French brand ZOE Tees for a capsule collection.

I *heart* Freja Beha Erichsen Tattoos

26 Mar

A tattoo post is no surprise for those who are following me on Twitter, recently I’ve had ink on the brain and asked for ideas/suggestions for my next tatt. It’s not a decision to take lightly, I had my last one done almost 2 years ago and have been thinking about my next ever since! There’s an awesome post on TFS about models with tattoos. It seems quite common for models to have some tatts these days. Freja has 8 (at the last count) and I pretty much love every single one of them. Still not decided on mine yet but I need to soon before I get something done on a whim!

I like her tattoos because they are nice and subtle, most of them are in discreet places. What do you think of tattoos?

Toughening up a Pretty Dress

24 Mar

Sometimes a dress is too pretty to be left on the hanger, even if you have nothing to do except run errands. I like to think of it as liberating certain items of my wardrobe! My Victoriana boots and plain black cardi were the perfect casual everyday items to compliment my blue/green satin dress. I’ve gotta say, it’s so much more fun running errands in a pretty dress than a casual jersey dress!

Do you dress items down so you can wear them more casually?

Primark Dress
Primark Cardigan
M&S Victoriana Boots

Thanks to the lovely Ida of Rouge Marie, a long-standing blogger friend, who has nudged me back into outfit posts. As the blog has evolved, outfit posts have become less frequent…I always intend to bring them back, I just needed someone to give me a little push! x

Super Duper Fashion Fix

23 Mar

A super-duper-califragalistic Fashion Fix here, to make up for the absence over the last couple of weeks. Comebacks should always be BIG!

Definitely NOT a model life

If you’re anything like me, you’ll love pouring over next season’s advertising campaigns. But every now and then, I stop to ponder the life of a model…getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to get your photo taken not to mention the designer goodies! Betty Sze, managing director of has revealed another side though; “[Conde Nast] pays $150 a day if you are a new model, after 1 year it goes up to $250. That means if you are Gisele [Bundchen] and work for American Vogue 2 days in a row, you would make $500. Many editorials pay nothing”. Kind of shocking!!

She goes on to explain, “Actually Conde Nast doesn’t have to pay anything, I don’t even know why they do. Girls don’t do editorial for money! Getting editorials and covers of French Vogue for example, drives up your rate for everything else and gets you noticed by the huge money clients like Lancome and Estee Lauder. Simple. Editorials and covers are the path towards the real money”. What are your thoughts? Are Conde Nast being unfair, paying pittance to models?

Anna Wintour is fighting Oliver Theyskens’ corner

Extract from her April editor’s letter – “Talent is a serious business. At Vogue, we do not take for granted the miraculous emergence, development, and ascendance of great artists. We depend on them for our livelihood. Without . . . the smashing of the rules that their progress gloriously entails, there is no culture worth celebrating. Olivier Theyskens’s recent departure from Nina Ricci suggests to me that the vital role of artistic talent has been obscured in the current economic climate. My staff and I were shocked to learn that Theyskens’s contract would not be renewed; and I am very concerned that the business of fashion is undervaluing the most important asset our industry requires: creative visionaries. There’s a reason we continue to see Theyskens’s influence everywhere, from catwalks to the mall. He’ll be back, but fashion must hold its nerve. This is the mission that we at Vogue happily shoulder.”

Nicole out, Audrey in

Not only is the cute and quirky Audrey Tatou starring in Coco Avant Chanel movie, she is also replacing Nicole Kidman as the face of Chanel No.5. The silent 2.5 minute movie is set on the Orient Express to Billie Holiday’s “I’m a fool to want you”. A teaser will air in late April on

Marc to marry!!

Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone are officially engaged!! They have been together for about a year. Aaaand that’s not all! After searching for a while, Mr Jacobs has finally found his dream house, a $13 million, 4,500-square-foot West Village townhouse on Bethune Street — with private garden and roof terrace — designed by Robert A.M. Stern. Niiiiiice!

Sander’s back!

Uniqlo has been pursuing Jil Sander (person not the label) for a collaboration since last June, and they finally have their woman! She has received quite a few offers since quitting fashion, but decided to try something completely different.

Fall Collections Cut

The models weren’t the only thing slimming down in preparation for the Fall 09 shows, the actual collections had to be reduced too. Designers no longer have the luxury of producing clothes which won’t go into production, as Betsy Johnson explains; “This season is different because what you see is what you get. Everthing shown will actually hit stores..unlike bigger runway shows where some looks weren’t available for sale”. Betsy’s Fall show is half the number of looks she showed for Spring 2009, 25 down from 51. She’s not the only one either, John Galliano lost 17 and Matthew Williamson and Oscar de la Renta both lost 11. Even Mr Armani had to scale back, losing 20 looks for his Giorgio Armani line.

The best of the rest…

Agy now single: Those engagement rumours are WAY off, Agyness Deyn and Albert Hammond Jr have broken up. Can’t say I care too much to be honest, I was bored of Agy a long, long time ago!

Bye bye LC: Spring/Summer deliveries of Lauren Conrad’s ‘collection’ have been cancelled, with no plans for further collections…yippee!

Harlow’s a sell out: Nicole Ritchie’s jewelry line House of Harlow has sold out in online preorders! The mother of one is now planning a maternity line.

Slumdog kids hit the catwalk: Little Lathika and Jamal hit the catwalk during India Fashion Week

Mid-season sales…already?!

21 Mar

I’ve taken to mooching in town instead of living the life of a recluse, after spending an entire week without leaving the house I thought I better rejoin the human race!! Anyway, my mooching and window shopping was interrupted by the obligatory bright red sale signs, declaring that it was time for mid-season sales. Is it just me, or are the mid-season sales ridiculously early?! I mean the Christmas sales draaaagged on til the February, and barely a month on the sales have started again!

Retailers are no doubt having a hard time, trying to succumb people to part with their hard-earned cash, as they keep an eye on profits and their bottom line. I’m not buying this strategy, it didn’t make much of a difference last year and it won’t this year! More long-term thinking is needed, rather than a constant sales culture that they are breeding. It just devalues their non-sale offer! Oh and while I’m lamenting the state of the retail industry, can someone please give me either a job or money so I can take advantage of the current situation?! Well, someone’s gotta help support the economy 😉

Most high street retailers already have their sales on, except H&M, Topshop and New Look. Here are my top picks from Oasis & Warehouse (good quality = good investment!) if you’re feeling particularly patriotic and want to do your bit to help our retailers! Oh and Miss Selfridge has some awesome pieces on sale, particularly denim.

Warehouse Pilgrim Apron Check Dress – £20

Warehouse Crystal Aztec Dress – £40

Oasis Pintuck Full Skirt – £10

Oasis Arthouse Print Shift Dress – £50

Oasis Asymmetric Mesh Trim Dress – £40

Oasis Drop Waisted Floral Cami – £25

What you didn’t see at Fashion Week…

16 Mar

As promised, I’ve been scouring the internet for images you haven’t seen. The glamour of backstage and the fabulous young things en route to the shows. Now the question I pose – what’s more exciting, the clothes and models designers send down the runway or the behind the scenes stuff?
