Fashion Fix

30 Dec
The last ever Fashion Fix for 2008! So what’s going on in the world of fashion as we prepare to say goodbye to 2008?

Beyonce the Fashionista?
So Beyonce is still on this little fashionista-wannabe mission. In her latest video ‘Diva’, B is still rockin Gareth Pugh. She was first spotted in Pugh for the MTV Europe Music Awards, raising eyebrows as it was a surprising departure from her usual awards get up – tight, low cut and sparkly. I’m not quite sure what to make of this, on one hand I think it’s brilliant that Pugh will get so much publicity, being a small, new-ish label. On the other hand, Beyonce and Pugh doesn’t quite sit right it seems to be a bit of an awkward fit. The video is awesome though, particularly those fringed sunglasses. Not sure if I like them more than Margiela’s L’incognito sunglasses though!

Whitney in the City

From what I gather, this has already aired in the US, but it has yet to arrive in the UK. We all know that The Hills is scripted, fake genius (totally addicted to it), and it seems Whitney Port’s spinoff The City is much of the same. Apparently she’s never really there and the filming crew make normal employees’ lives a nightmare. From being unable to move things on their own desks to the constant paparazzi, seems like life is not rosey at DVF. Gonna sound very shallow, but I don’t really care about those dramas, I’m more interesting in Olivia Palermo, who’s been shooting Whitney bitchy looks in the adverts. A real-life Amanda? Let’s hope so, please let there be a real-life Marc too!!

Bill Blass Bought

Very good news for Bill Blass, Peacock International Holdings has bought the firm for the bargain basement price of $10 million. There are plans to revive the couture line within 9-12 months and they have ideas of who they want to design the line, so watch this space…

Chanel Crisis

Ok crisis may be a bit strong, but this is still pretty major. I’m still devastated about Chanel’s decision to pull the amazing mobile art exhibition before it reaches London…and now the fashion powerhouse has announced plans to cut 200 workers, 10% of it’s production team. Some are calling this the worst crisis since Coco herself let the entire staff go in 1939, the beginning of the war. This decision comes among several stories of major fashion houses bracing themselves as the Credit Crunch bites. Prada recently shocked Milan by placing sale signs in the windows…

Shop the Sales for Spring ’09

25 Dec

Whilst my family finish off Christmas lunch and head towards the living room to catch some Wallace & Gromit and a quick kip, my mind’s on other things. Namely the fabulous Boxing Day Sales. I know a lot of sales have already started (Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Gap, H&M, All Saints, Faith and Warehouse to name but a few), my sales shopping can’t really start until Boxing Day. It’s like a tradition, whilst most people are having a lie in and thankful that Christmas is over, I’m up bright and early to grab the cut priced bargains.

But you’re never really snagging a bargain if you wouldn’t have normally bought it anyway or it doesn’t fit right. I’m not encouraging you to go down the boring route though! Magazines are always telling us to buy basics rather than ‘trend items’ as they are classic items. But I suggest looking forward to the key trends for Spring ’09 and snapping them up now! So, behold, Fashion Daydreams Guide for Shopping the Sales for Spring ’09!
Colours and Prints

Leave behind the African tribal prints of Spring 08 in favour of the new season prints. Florals of course will still be about, but it’s now all about super oversize prints and pretty watercolour florals. Fall’s tartan will be replaced by checks and stripes in the coming months. Colour-wise, prepare to see the back of black. Strong brights will be one of the key trends, think lime greens and sky blues. Neutrals will also be big, to balance out the bold colours – dove grey, cream, white. Softer colours will be making an appearance, so be ready for cornflower blue and soft lilacs.
The new silhouette
Think long & lean and sleek & sophisticated. Slim silhouettes will prevail, skinny crops and cigarette pants. Controlled volume is also a hot choice for Spring, in the light airy fabrics which will explode next spring. Fabric-wise, think Jil Sander Spring ’08.

Shiny, shiny magpie fabrics
Sequins and shiny, wet-look fabrics are still going to be in…so snap up those cut price leggings! High-tech plastic-y fabrics and metallic fabrics are also a safe bet.

Jumpsuits

These have been around for a while, though I have been hard pressed to find a jumpsuit that I’ve liked enough to purchase. The good thing about something that’s already been around is that there will be a lot more wearable styles the second time around, from cute casual rompers to hot little after hours jumpsuits. Just chuck on a belt and some statement jewellery and you’ll be good to go!

Harem Pants

Those two words tend to send a make even a hardy fashionista contemplate a safer alternative, but rest assured they will be everywhere come Spring. During my visit to Barcelona, all the chic Spanish women were sporting theirs with flat gladiator sandals and vest tops in muted colours. That’s a cute option for a relaxed summer look, but I think they would work just as well for work (killer heels, smart top and a fitted sleeveless jacket) or even on a night out (again killer heels with a cropped top). The key to pulling them off is to keep everything else simple and let the trousers speak for themselves.

Blazers

Good news for you blazer lovers, they will still be perfectly acceptable. For those who are a little bored of the same old blazer trend which has been going strong for a few years now, invest in a sleeveless little number to keep it fresh. Just layer it with a jumper or elbow length gloves til it warms up!

Of course this is just my interpretation of the Spring 09 trends. There’s an awesome post on TFS which you must read for an in depth and varied breakdown. There’s no need to be a total slave to fashion of course, it’s always a good time to plug the gaps in your wardrobe. I’ll be shopping for tops in all colours and sizes (been a dress-fiend for too long), flat biker boots and also a leather jacket.

Fashion Fix

23 Dec

Again slightly delayed Fashion Fix…but I posted the Spring 2009 campaign pics so I get let off right? Plus it’s Christmas? *angelic grin* My devotion to the blog is increasing approximately 10-fold, my office has shut for the Christmas holidays (woohoo) so I have a lot more free time on my hands. In fact, expect a special Fashion Daydreams Guide tomorrow….so make sure you check back! And on with the fashion news…

Acne/Lanvin collection

Finally, pictures of the Acne/Lanvin collaboration have surfaced. I remember being ridiculously excited, until I read how much the pieces are going to cost…around the £600 mark if I remember correctly. But salivating over the pictures is free you know 😉 Bit of a let down to be honest…not sure if I would buy anything even if I had the money…

Fashion Collaborations

I’ve got a confession to make, promise you won’t hate me? I actually think Mischa Barton’s bag range is actually quite nice…and I secretly wanted her hair when she was in Season 3-4 of The OC. The bags cute and the little gold emblem is very pretty, a lot better than having a well known name or identifiable pattern on a bag. Mischa is now teaming up with Stacey Lapidus to create headbands…yeah, random! I don’t care about this as much as I care about news that Gwen Stefani’s stylist Andrea Lieberman is to create a new line – A.L.C. No word on when it will hit stores, but pieces will be under $500 yippee!

Vogue Best Dressed List

Best dressed list is out, I think it’s US Vogue as I’m not sure who 4 of the people are but that’s what Google is for.

1. Blake Lively
2. Anne Hathaway
3. Laura Jarrett – who?
4. M.I.A

5. Elettra Wiedemann – who?
6. Alexa Chung
7. Biana Brandolini – who?
8. Sonja Van Bebber – who?
9. Dasha Zhukova
10. Raquel Zimmerman
Beatrix hits DSM

Lastly, a bit of news which has really made me smile. Heard of London-based shoe brand Beatrix Ong? To be honest, chances are probably not. Luckily though, I had the fortune of working at the Beatrix Ong store whilst at uni and know first hand that the shoes are both beautiful and comfortable. I had both flats and vertiginous wedges which saw me though an hour’s commute not to mention all day on my feet, very comfortably. Anywhoo onto the news! Beatrix Ong has teamed up with Dover Street Market to create two exclusive designs for Spring 2009. The Maggie are white slingbacks and Valli are gorgeous metallic or stone platforms. Inspired by Frankie Valli, I personally guarantee that these will be the comfiest shoes you slip your feet into, ever.

Fashion Daydreams Fabulous Fashion Gift Guide

17 Dec

Twinkly lights? Green & red everywhere? Smell of mulled wine in the air? Yes, it’s Christmas!! I’m one of those psychotic people who thinks about Christmas in November, and of course my presents are almost all wrapped and under the tree. I’m the youngest in the family you see..well that’s my excuse anyway 😉 But…I do realise that not everyone is super organised, I’ve even heard of some people leaving it til *shock horror* Christmas Eve!!! With that in mind, I’ve put together a fabulous gift guide. My top tip is to avoid things that you think they will like and go for the things that love but haven’t got round to buying. Things that make amazing gifts but you wouldn’t necessarily buy for yourself.

Loungewear

This is a no-brainer in my opinion. Every girl likes pjs or loungewear, or at least needs it. I’m a total fiend for the stuff, two bulging drawers and I’m constantly buying more. The best place on the high street is La Senza, they have everything from cute eye masks to cosy pjs and sexy silk nighties. David & Goliath are serious competition though, with their witty slogans and cute cartoons. ASOS and Dorothy Perkins have also got some great stuff, my awesome yeti boots are from Dotty Ps and I love them!
Bags & Accessories

I’m not a bag lady, in fact I am loathed to buy bags. The zip on my current bag is actually broken but I don’t have the time or willing to trawl the shops for a new bag. So Santa take note, bags are a good option! Can be a bit tricky to get right though…so I would generally opt for some nice jewels or a belt. My go-to destination is ASOS, so many different styles and brands in the same place. And I’m still enamoured with all things noir, but perk them up a bit with a touch of gold.

Snugglies

My name for the things that make winter warm and snuggly:scarves, hats, gloves. They’re always a welcome gift come winter. I would go for mismatching and clashy separates rather than a boring matching set. And look out for textures, pom poms, cable knits and the softest wool. The highstreet have great options, from Topshop to New Look, and at the risk of sounding boring and repetitive ASOS!

Books

No wait don’t fall asleep! These are the fabulous books that you really wish you had but can’t really buy for yourself. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t buy them yourself, but my colleague H totally agrees with this sentiment, which is why we’ve bought a couple of these books for other people. H is actually going to receive one of them tomorrow…I had a wee word with her Secret Santa at work to make sure she finally gets something she really, really wants.

Fashion Fix

16 Dec

Another late fashion fix folks, I blame the Christmas Party. Much naughtiness occurred…drunken lip locking, purposefully charging items to someone else’s room and forcing the MD to down tequila slammers were just a few of the choice highlights from the evening. There’s some very juicy news to make up for my absence though…

Fashion/Film

Tim Walker Lily Cole
The fine line between fashion and art is getting blurrier by the second. First there was the Tom Ford movie, then the Vogue documentary. Now, there’s news that British fashion photographer Tim Walker is set to make a film. The photographer, known for his fairytale-like images, is set to release a short in Spring and a full length feature in Autumn. No word yet on plots or characters.

Menswear shake up

Gareth Pugh
It’s all go in menswear, a section of fashion I mostly choose to ignore. Womenswear and shoes are so complicated, there’s little room in my attention span for man stuff. But you can’t help but sit up and take notice. Fendi, Marni and Valentino have all cancelled their menswear shows, and Zac Posen has stated that he definitely will not be moving ahead with plans for a menswear line. However, in the past month, Matthew Williamson, Christophe Decarnin and Roland Mouret have all announced plans to launch menswear lines. Latest names to add to the list are very unexpected – Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh! I think it’s awesome news, for the first time ever, I can’t wait til the menswear shows!

New Gen 09

Louise Goldin Spring 09
The winners of the Topshop-sponsored New Gen award have been announced. Eight designers are receiving sponsorship for their catwalk shows, including three who will be making their runway debuts. The five New Gen catwalk veterans are Danielle Scutt, House of Holland, Louise Goldin, Meadham Kirchhoff and Peter Pilotto, while the trio of newcomers are Mary Kratrantzou, Mark Fast and Nasir Mazhar. The British Fashion Council award is not to be sniffed at, previous winners include Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson and Christopher Kane.

Anna Wintour to stay put?

Anna Wintour US Vogue
The rumour about Ms Wintour and US Vogue parting ways has certainly been round and round the rumour mill. The latest is that Anna will stay put, apparently Vogue was the most profitable magazine for Conde Nast in the last year. So is she safe for now?

Kate M and Sasha P: delicious double team

Longchamp Spring 09 Kate Moss Sasha Pivovarova
Longchamp Spring 09 Kate Moss Sasha Pivovarova
Who can forget the sizzling Longchamp Fall 08, Kate Moss and the equally gorgeous Gaspard Ulliel. The Spring 09 campaign is set to put it in the shade, with the fabulous pairing of Kate Moss and Sasha Pivovarova.

Karl gets the last word again

Karl Lagerfeld
Yes, I do love ending my Fashion Fix with a bit of Karl Lagerfeld. I love him, you love him now let’s read about him. Karl admits that even he is tightening his belt: “I have moved to a smaller house in Paris, and I don’t fancy having so much staff now.”

Even his new house in Vermont is “not giant.”

It’s “very Emily Dickinson . . . In fact it’s almost Puritanical. For me it’s a new form of modesty.”

But don’t get carried away with the cost-cutting — he still needs some staff.

“The chambermaid, chauffeur and chef are still musts . . . around the clock.”

And the Humvees, he’s got to have those.

“I have three of them. Two here in Paris and one in Monte Carlo. The Hummer is like a tank and gives me a feeling of security. I don’t want to drive at the same level as the others.”
